Send in your preliminary application form now. The system works best if you are able to give us a few months' notice of your desire to start; that way you can be fully prepared. If you would like to start sooner than that, we will do everything we can to help you. If you are not in a hurry, you can apply 12-18 months before you would like to start.
You can express a preference for a particular town, city or (e.g. in the U.S.A.) state, and we will do everything we can to accommodate your wish. However, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to find a host family there. The most important thing is that you and the host family should be suitable for each other.
Yes, of course. Many of our au pairs apply with their boyfriend or girlfriend, in which case we try to place them in families as near to each other as possible. However, since the most important thing is that au pair and host family are a good match, we cannot guarantee to place couples near each other.
Yes, of course. We are just as pleased to receive applications from men. Indeed there are some families who specifically request for their children to be accompanied by a male au pair. Male au pairs have to have more childcare experience than female ones, but this gives them a greater competitive edge.
Contact us immediately and we will give the family every assistance we can to admit them to the Programme. You need an au pair's visa to work as an au pair, and it is a specific condition of getting one that you don't make your own private arrangements with a host family.
It is our prime concern that our au pairs always get on well with their host families, and vice versa. It sometimes takes a little time for both parties to settle in to the new arrangements. If a conflict does occur, we will do everything we can to find the best solution for all concerned.
Before you start work with a host family you will need to have completed at least 100-200 hours' childcare work. The more experience you have and the more references you can produce, the more confident you will be with the children placed in your care and the greater your chances will be of being accepted on to the Programme. This is the primary consideration for every host family when choosing a new au pair. So please bear this in mind, and get as much experience as you can.
You must be in possession of a full driving licence before you travel to work as an au pair in the United States. If you are just learning to drive, you can still apply to join the Programme. For safety reasons it is imperative that you are a competent, responsible and experienced driver.
Effective communication skills in English are a requirement of your being accepted on to the Programme. Most host families regard learning the language as extremely important, so you will have to do a lot of practice before setting off if you want to develop your language skills. It is most important that in an emergency you would be able to call on the appropriate help, for example for an ambulance if a child in your care has had an accident.
The local agencies operating in the cities throughout Europe where we place au pairs all place great importance on there being a language school in the same locality as every host family, thus ensuring that there are always good opportunities for learning the language.
In the U.S.A. it is a statutory requirement that all au pairs study in a college of higher education throughout the year of their engagement in the country. Au pairs of ours who have now returned to Hungary have studied such diverse subjects as computer technology, foreign languages, American history and culture, history of art, law, and so on.
Higher education offers you unparalleled opportunities, including for meeting au pairs of other nationalities and also young Americans.
